Hello November, I have been waiting  for you. I just didn’t know I was. You are the forgotten month, the that sits quietly and patiently between Samhain and everything All Hallows Eve inspired and the red month, the festive season of good will to all. You sit there in the middle of these tow mammoth months boasting Movember and other charitable causes and people use your peace to busy themselves for the upcoming December.

November is when the cold weather arrives. Autumn and winter fight to claim you. Winter creeps up the garden path every morning slowly and with a chill, I hear her creeping. Autumn prevails and she is seen most sunny, warm afternoons. These months, as I have mentioned before are like visual poetry to me and I love nothing  more than to soak in their words.

This wallpaper set I have created is in homage to that poetry, the season’s poetry. The words read ‘In the fall, I believe again in poetry if nothing else it is a movement of the mind.’ They are an excerpt from a beautiful poem by Jaakko A. Ahokas, writer. (See the full piece below). The image is from a set I shot in the garden of the Ardilaun Hotel which I still have to share.

In the fall, I believe again in poetry
if nothing else it is
a movement of the mind.
Summers ball together
into sticky lumps,
spring evenings are glass beads from one mould
for standard-size youth,
winter a smooth heaviness, not even cold.
But the mind trembles
here, on the brink
the mind trembles
there is life, after all,
there is life, still
unbelief left.”

My absolute favourite time of year to shoot nature (and people for that matter) is Autumn!! There is something so energising and irritable about the season for me. The days aren’t too cold and the Autumn sunshine breaks through in golden bursts of energy. I think theres something about this time of year that speaks to artists and that makes us want to create. Maybe its the changing colours of the leaves and foliage which is so inspiring or that back-to-school feeling that everyone has a spring in their step to create and learn..

The quote I used here is one of my favourites too, its by Charles Nodier.

Such days of autumnal decline hold a strange mystery which adds to the gravity of all our moods.

I think this is quite a fitting quote as I always see a shift in my moods in Autumn too. Firstly, saying goodbye to Summer is always quite hard. The long summer days are gone, the freckles are fading and the evenings darkness starts to fall early.  But once the winter coats are donned and we venture back outside into nature in all its changing beauty, the mood is one of overall excitement for the changing of the seasons, the slow down and the hibernation. I wanted to make this one for some time. This is an image I shot out on the bog in Connemara in  October of last year. Such a wild, colourful and dynamic shot, it cried out to be given away for FREE to you! So instead of a dull winter shot, lets start the year with this colourful offering.
The quote is by T.S. Elliot and is one of my favourites. ‘For last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await another voice.’
